In what promises to be a celestial treat, the colour-changing display is set to light up the night sky and the best chance of seeing it – weather permitting – will be around 9pm. The news came from AuroraWatch – an alert service run by university scientists who measure geomagnetic activity and highlight any likely instances of aurora borealis being visible around the UK. Its alert system is colour-coded and the alert for this Tuesday evening is amber which means that aurora are most likely to be visible in northern England – but possibly in other areas of the country too.
The hours each side of that are given a yellow alert, meaning that there is still a chance of spotting some activity but through a camera lens this time and not by eye. However -and this is the down side – local weather conditions need to be right to enable viewers to enjoy the spectacle. The sky has to be dark and clear. Given the fact the nights are now drawing in, the 9pm window would appear perfect but unfortunately the evening’s forecast is far from ideal.
Read More Take a look at the incredible views of outer space you can see from Kielder Observatory The Met Office is currently predicting some cloud around the North East. The Newcastle and County Durham forecast shows cloud while people in parts of Northumberland , such as Ashington, may be in with a slightly better chance as the weather is predicted to be only partly cloudy at 9pm. PA And it’s the same for Kielder which, being home to the Observatory and some of the darkest skies in Europe, could be the best bet for sight of the display.
A post on the AuroraWatch UK Facebook page on Tuesday explained that high speed solar wind had caused strong disturbances to the Earth’s magnetic field which created Northern Lights the previous evening – but Monday’s cloud had scuppered the chance of seeing them.

The storm was generated late last week by holes in the sun’s outermost magnetic layer, known as its corona. This allows charged particles to escape more readily into space, resulting in streams of relatively fast ‘solar wind’, often referred to as a high speed stream or solar storm. Following a large ejection, solar storm particles can interfere with machinery in Earth’s orbit as well as at the planet’s surface. The KP index is the scale used to measure geomagnetic storms and ranges from 0 to 9.
Experts have suggested tonight’s storm could rise as high as kp 5 between the blue and green lines in the map pictured The NOAA forecasts tonight’s event will be a G-1 or ‘minor’ storm, which could become a G-2 ‘moderate storm’ depending on how the charged particles hit Earth. Auroras tonight could reach areas between the blue and green lines in this image The minor geomagnetic storm, which could trigger displays of the Northern Lights file photo will most likely affect northern regions of the planet, including Scotland and the ‘northern tier’ of the United States A solar storm will collide with Earth later this evening.
The Northern and Southern Lights are natural light spectacles triggered in our atmosphere that are also known as the ‘Auroras’. There are two types of Aurora – Aurora Borealis, which means ‘dawn of the north’, and Aurora Australis, ‘dawn of the south. These collisions emit light.

Past Events Chatsworth Day 12th September On a dull Saturday morning an enthusiastic group of people met in the courtyard of Chatsworth to embark on a walk uphill through the woods to an unusual looking tower. By the time we reached the tower it was starting to brighten up. We walked downhill to the river where we had a picnic lunch. After lunch we explored the house. The ceilings were richly decorated and there were many impressive paintings hung on the walls. Some members of the group then tried to find their way to the centre of the maze, whilst others visited the gardens.
The day ended with a delicious meal at the Devonshire Arms before we set off on our journeys home. Ingleton Falls We had an enjoyable day at Ingleton. It started off with a walk up hill and gradually progressed to reveal the impressive waterfall.

We were watching them last night. I used to think the Aurora Borealis was a reflection off the polar ice caps I found a website ” http: Northern lights originate from our sun. During large explosions and flares, huge quantities of solar particles are thrown out of the sun and into deep space. These plasma clouds travel through space with speeds varying from to kilometers per second.
But even with such speeds over a million kilometer per hour , it takes these plasma clouds two to three days to reach our planet. When they are closing in on Earth, they are captured by Earth’s magnetic field the magnetosphere and guided towards Earth’s two magnetic poles; the geomagnetic south pole and the geomagnetic north pole. On their way down towards the geomagnetic poles, the solar particles are stopped by Earth’s atmosphere, which acts as an effective shield against these deadly particles.
